Every photograph on this site, the photographer who took it, the licence it is published under, and the sources behind the trip numbers.

Photographs

The pictures on the race cards come from Wikimedia Commons, where every file carries a licence anybody can read. We use only the ones published under a Creative Commons licence or released into the public domain, and the licence each one came under is printed beside it below. Nothing has been altered: a picture is cropped to the shape of the box it sits in, and where a course line is drawn over one it is drawn in the page, not into the file.

A postcard you make of your race is the one place a picture is changed: text and the course line are printed over it. The photographer, the licence and that change are printed on the card itself, so the credit travels with it wherever it is shared.

Landmark photographs

The pictures on the landmark cards along a course come from Wikimedia Commons too, and only from files released into the public domain or published under CC0 or CC BY. Each is cropped to the shape of its card and otherwise unchanged.

Film stills

The picture on a film card, and the picture behind the play button, is a frame of that film. The films are flown over Google Earth imagery, so the frames carry it too: aerial imagery from Google Earth, and the imagery providers credited on screen in each film. That credit is printed on every screen that shows one, which is what our permission to use the imagery asks for.

The frames are served from this site rather than from YouTube's own thumbnail host, which is Google's. Nothing on a race page's film is requested from anybody else until you press play.

Course heights

The elevation figures and the height of the course line in our films come from public surveys. These two ask for a credit wherever something made from them is shown, and here it is.

3D course maps

The 3D map on a race page is built from open data: the course line from OpenStreetMap and the city around it from public registers. Here is whose, and under what licence.

Race maps

The small map of the city behind a course on a race card is drawn from map data © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License: the streets, the water and the parks, with the course line, itself matched to OpenStreetMap roads, drawn over them.
