The organiser says “een toptijd op de 42 km zal het daarom niet worden” and describes the course as a route through Natura 2000 land. It starts and finishes at AV’34 in the Orderbos and passes the Apenheul, the Kruisjesdal, Assel, the Kootwijkerzand, Zendgebouw A (the “Cathedral”) at Radio Kootwijk, the Asselse hei and the Orderbos again. The A1 motorway and the railway are crossed through tunnels. Part of the route runs through the Kroondomein Het Loo, and the organiser has the owners’ permission only for race day.

Start and finish are at about 35 m. Within the first 6 km the course rises to its high point of 75.6 m at km 5.5 and then rolls through woods and heath for the rest of the distance, so the climbing is spread out and none of it is a single long hill. The loose sand on the Kootwijkerzand slows the pace more than the climbing does.

The organiser sets the limit at 5:30 hours “ook met het oog op de invallende duisternis”. A broom wagon waits at 35 km and runners who reach it after 15:10 are asked to get in. The entry fee covers coffee or tea twice, soup, rye bread with bacon or a vegetarian soup, and a medal. There is no late entry, not even on the day, and the organiser is explicit that this is not a race with prizes for the first finishers. There are five refreshment posts, the third at 25 km at Zendgebouw A with bouillon and an energy bar.
