Haikou's marathon was first held in 2015, and the 2024 edition ran on 14 January with a marathon, a half marathon and a mini run.
The city’s tourism, culture and sports bureau calls it one of the most popular coastal marathons in China. The 2021 edition was the first to apply for the Chinese Athletics Association A1 certification, and the 2024 race applied again.

The bureau’s description of the classic course names Binjiang Road with a turn, the Xinbu Bridge, the Haixin Bridge, Bihai Avenue, Century Avenue and Century Bridge, then two stretches of Binhai Avenue with a turn at Changxi Road. The half marathon follows the same road to Baishamen Park, and the mini run ends at the Hainan Provincial Museum.
