The organiser calls its courses flat, fast and officially measured, and describes the marathon and half marathon as passing the city’s main sights, often directly along the Main. The marathon is two laps through the city centre with a shared finish in its heart. A marathon runner may switch to the half marathon by finishing after 21.1 km.

The marathon is one of the few events in Germany recognised for qualification for the Boston Marathon.

Whole courseTacticsFour start blocks and a 15:00 finish closeBlocks A to D start 9:10, 9:15, 9:20 and 9:25; the finish closes at 15:00.

Block A is for marathon runners under 3:20, block B for 3:20 to 3:50, block C for 3:50 to 4:20 and block D for 4:20 and slower. Results carry both the gun time from the start signal and the net time from the start line, and placings use the gun time.

Aid stations stand every 5 km with water, apple spritzer, cola mix, an isotonic drink and bananas, with water points between them. Pacers run from 3:30 to 5:00 in the marathon. After the 15:00 finish close runners still out may continue on the pavement.
