The organiser’s site says the race is run each year on the birthday of the former prime minister Indira Gandhi, 19 November. Rajiv Gandhi flagged off the first one on 19 November 1985, and it ran every year to 1989. In 1990 it was held in Dehradun, and after protests it came back to Prayagraj from 1991. A break followed in 2020, during the lockdown.
The 2025 race, on 19 November, was the 40th edition.
