Munich is not a hilly marathon, but its climbing is not spread evenly either. The first 16 km drift gently down, from 513 m at the start to 497 m at the top of the English Garden by the Aumeister. From there the course spends the next 16 km going up: through the park, over the Isar, across Bogenhausen and Berg am Laim to the Werksviertel, the high point at km 32.1.
It is a long, shallow rise, about 2 m a kilometre, so you will feel it more in your pace than in your legs. Then the course gives most of it back: 15 m down to the Ludwigsbrücke by km 34, and only 7 m of climbing in the last 10 km home.
Measured
The triumphal arch at the top of Ludwigstrasse is the hinge of the whole course. You pass under it heading south at km 5.9, on the way into the old town, Odeonsplatz and Marienplatz, and out to the U-turn at Sendlinger Tor. You come back through it heading north at km 10.8, on the way to the English Garden.
The third time is at km 37.0, after the Isartor and one last run through the centre. From there it is 5 km home to the Olympic Park.
Measured
Halfway comes in the English Garden, by the Chinese Tower. A few hundred metres later the course leaves the park and crosses the Isar on the Max-Joseph-Brücke at km 21.4, into Bogenhausen, and the long climb to the Werksviertel goes on on the east bank.
The way back over the river is the Ludwigsbrücke at km 34.1, beside the Deutsches Museum on its island, downhill from the high point. Straight after it comes the Isartor, the old city gate, and the road into the centre.
Measured
Older Munich marathons finished with a lap inside the Olympic Stadium. The 2026 race did not: the stadium is under renovation, and the line was on Willi-Daume-Platz, on the shore of the Olympic Lake below the Olympic Tower. The way home ran up Franz-Joseph-Strasse and back into the park, over a footbridge about 250 m before the line.
The start, on the Spiridon-Louis-Ring level with the stadium’s Marathon Gate, was about 730 m from the finish, both inside the Olympic Park. The 2027 course is not out yet.
Sourced
One lap of Munich from the Olympic Park: under the Siegestor three times, through Marienplatz, around the English Garden, over the Isar twice and up to the Werksviertel, to a finish by the Olympic Lake. 59 m of climbing.
The Munich Marathon is a loop of 42.2 km with 59 m of climbing. Its lowest point is 497 m and its highest 533 m above sea level.
