The Bahnhofstrasse at Paradeplatz, the city's main shopping street, run on the way out and again on the way in.

Height drawn many times taller than life. Heights: GEDTM30.

Course elevation profile, 8× vertical exaggeration Elevation along the course from km 0 to km 42. The trace runs between 407 and 413 metres, a range of 5 metres, drawn at 8 times vertical exaggeration so the shape is legible. Smoothed over 1 km before this profile was derived. An unsmoothed urban surface carries the buildings and would assert a climb that is not there. The dashed stretches are bridge decks: Quaibrücke, km 3.9 to 4; Quaibrücke, km 8.4 to 8.5; Quaibrücke, km 36 to 36.1; Quaibrücke, km 41.9 to 42. A bare-earth model reads the ground or the water beneath a bridge, not the deck the runner is on, so those runs are interpolated between the ground either side rather than measured, and they under-report the real climb across a span.

km 0 to 42.2GradientFive metres of difference along the lakeA band of 5.3 m from start to finish, at about 408 m above the sea.

The road sits at about 407 to 413 m for the whole distance, next to the lake. The lowest point is the start at the Quaibrücke, 407.4 m, and the highest is 412.8 m at about km 17.2, a spread of only 5.3 m. The finish at the Sechseläutenplatz is 408.7 m, 1.2 m above the start. The 26.7 m of total climb comes from small rises and dips rather than any hill.

The organiser’s line is that 70% of all participants beat their personal best in Zürich, and it also says the course is measured to World Athletics standards.

Measured

Whole courseTacticsReach Meilen by 11:10The turn at Meilen has its own clock; the finish closes at 13:45.

The start is at 08:00 at the Quaibrücke. The organiser’s page gives the marathon two clocks: “Runners who do not reach the turning point in Meilen by 11:10 must hand in their bib number and transponder” (“Läufer:innen die den Wendepunkt in Meilen bis 11.10 Uhr nicht erreichen, müssen ihre Startnummer und den Transponder abgeben”), and an overall limit of 5.30 hours net with the finish closing at 13:45. Timing mats record splits at 10, 20, 21.1, 30 and 40 km.

The organiser also warns that planned roadworks in the city may bring small changes to the route, to be announced in time.

Sourced

Whole courseLandmarkThe Quaibrücke, four timesThe start bridge comes back four times along the course.

The organiser puts the start at the Quaibrücke and the finish at the Sechseläutenplatz. The course line passes over the Quaibrücke deck at about km 3.9, 8.4, 36.0 and 41.9, so the bridge and the lakefront around it are a spot where a supporter sees a runner more than once. The organiser’s GPX is titled for the 2025 race; the 2027 route may shift at points because of roadworks.

Put it on before you leave for the start: heels and toes, inner thighs, under a bra or heart-rate strap.
