Course elevation profile, 8× vertical exaggeration Elevation along the course from km 0 to km 68. The trace runs between 1538 and 2698 metres, a range of 1159 metres, drawn at 8 times vertical exaggeration so the shape is legible. Smoothed over 1 km before this profile was derived. An unsmoothed urban surface carries the buildings and would assert a climb that is not there. The dashed stretches are bridge decks: Gämpeweg, km 65.4 to 65.5. A bare-earth model reads the ground or the water beneath a bridge, not the deck the runner is on, so those runs are interpolated between the ground either side rather than measured, and they under-report the real climb across a span.

The organiser lists the route as Davos, Scalettapass, Sertigpass, Sertig Chleinalp, Fanezfurgga, Monstein, Jatzmeder, Sertig Sand and back to Davos. It starts at the Sportzentrum together with the Gold Run, runs up the Dischmatal with a view of the Scaletta glacier on the old pack-horse path, and continues over the Panoramatrail to the Sertigpass. The way down from there is steep and rocky. The time limit is 14 hours, from the 7:00 start to a finish closing at 21:00.

The Gold Run goes Davos, Scalettapass, Sertigpass, Davos over 42.93 km, on the trails of the Diamond Run for the first part and the closing phase. Its time limit is 11 hours 30 minutes, with the finish closing at 18:30. The organiser’s tip for a Diamond runner whose energy does not last the 68 km is to run down the Sertig valley and finish the Gold Run instead, where they are scored as a Gold finisher.

The 68 km and 43 km runs are held in alpine, partly high-alpine terrain. The organiser says a drop to below freezing with snowfall is possible above 2,000 m at any time and that suitable clothing is required in every run. For Diamond and Gold it recommends arriving early and, if possible, spending some days in Davos or above 1,500 m, with up to 5 days of acclimatisation as a guide, which is a recommendation and not a condition of taking part.

An invisible layer before the start keeps seams, straps and shoes from rubbing skin raw.

Put it on before you leave for the start: heels and toes, inner thighs, under a bra or heart-rate strap.

Try it on a long run first, like everything you use on race day.
