Course elevation profile, 8× vertical exaggeration Elevation along the course from km 0 to km 42. The trace runs between 179 and 206 metres, a range of 27 metres, drawn at 8 times vertical exaggeration so the shape is legible. Smoothed over 1 km before this profile was derived. An unsmoothed urban surface carries the buildings and would assert a climb that is not there. The dashed stretches are bridge decks: Douglas Road, km 4.5 to 4.7; West Sylvania Avenue, km 30.1 to 30.2; Corey Road, km 31 to 31.1; WildWood Trail, km 32.7 to 33.1. A bare-earth model reads the ground or the water beneath a bridge, not the deck the runner is on, so those runs are interpolated between the ground either side rather than measured, and they under-report the real climb across a span.

km 0 to 42.2GeometryFrom Bancroft Street through Ottawa Hills and Sylvania to the Glass BowlA campus start, Ottawa Hills, Sylvania and Wildwood Metropark, then a finish on the Glass Bowl field.

The organiser describes it this way: the course “will begin on Bancroft St. near the University of Toledo North Tower. It will circle campus past Ottawa Park before continuing West into beautiful Ottawa Hills.” From there it heads north to the Metroparks along the University Parks bike trail, tours Sylvania, returns through Wildwood Metropark and down the bike trail for a short tour of the campus, and ends on the field inside the Glass Bowl. The start line is at 2925 W Bancroft St.

km 0 to 42.2GradientFlat, and finishing a little lower than it startsA 27 m spread from lowest to highest, with the high point at km 23.5 and the low point at the finish.

The organiser calls the course fast and flat, with “little elevation changes”, and the profile agrees. From the start at about 182 m the road wanders between 181 m and 190 m for the first 10 km, rises to its high point of 205.8 m at km 23.5, and runs down to 179.2 m at the finish, the lowest point of the course at km 42.1. The whole spread is 26.7 m.

The total climb depends on how it is counted. Over a 1 km window it is 67.3 m; a watch that adds up every short rise reads more.

Measured

km 0 to 42.2TacticsA 6.5 hour limit with two checkpointsRoughly 15 minutes a mile; miss a checkpoint and a sag vehicle takes over.

The organiser’s marathon page puts the limit at 6.5 hours, strictly enforced by local police, and says runners must keep up “approximately a 15 minute per mile pace” to make it. There are two checkpoints along the course; a runner who does not reach them in time is not allowed to continue, and SAG vehicles travelling at the closing pace collect anyone who stops or falls behind. The page does not give the checkpoint times or distances.
