The organiser’s route leaves Wrest Point car park along Sandy Bay Road, turns left into Byron Street and left onto Davey Street, which becomes Huon Road. It then turns right onto Pillinger Drive and carries on to the pinnacle of Mount Wellington. The organiser bills it as the World’s Toughest Road Half Marathon and describes it as physically challenging and scenically stunning. Buses are included in the entry to take finishers from the Pinnacle back to Wrest Point.

The event booklet carries a contingency course for the Point to Pinnacle if the pinnacle of kunanyi / Mount Wellington cannot be reached on the day. Four past editions were run on an alternative course because of weather: 2001, 2003, 2016 and 2019, and the winning times in the starred years of 2016 and 2019 (1:11:07 and 1:03:57 for the men) are much faster than the usual 1:21 to 1:26. The record on the full course is 1:21:29, set by Sam Clifford in 2025.
