Course elevation profile, 8× vertical exaggeration Elevation along the course from km 0 to km 42. The trace runs between 4 and 17 metres, a range of 13 metres, drawn at 8 times vertical exaggeration so the shape is legible. Smoothed over 1 km before this profile was derived. An unsmoothed urban surface carries the buildings and would assert a climb that is not there. The dashed stretches are bridge decks: 萬里隧道, km 0.4 to 1.6; 四十四號橋, km 4.7 to 4.7; 新磺溪橋, km 7.7 to 8.1; 王公橋, km 17.6 to 18.2; 王公橋, km 23.9 to 24.5; 新磺溪橋, km 34 to 34.5; 四十四號橋, km 37.4 to 37.5; 萬里隧道, km 40.6 to 41.6. A bare-earth model reads the ground or the water beneath a bridge, not the deck the runner is on, so those runs are interpolated between the ground either side rather than measured, and they under-report the real climb across a span. km 0 to 42.2GeometryOne coast road out to the turn and the same way backOut along the north coast from Wanli, turn near the 27.5 km marker, back the same way.

The organiser describes the marathon as a list of roads: 起點→台2線48.6km→萬里隧道→大鵬派出所→【左轉】環金路→清水路(台2線)→淡金公路(台2線)→折返點(台2線約27.5 km), and then back through the Wanli Tunnel to the start. In English: from the 48.6 km marker of Highway 2 in Wanli, through the tunnel to the Dapeng police station, left onto Huanjin Road, along Qingshui Road and the Tamkin Highway to the turn.

The two markers are 21.1 km apart, which is half the marathon, so the turn is the half-way point and the road home is the road out.

km 0 to 42.2GradientA coast road with about 50 m of climbing in the whole raceSea-level road almost all the way; the highest open road is 14.7 m, at km 4.

The start sits at about 12 m, the road is at 14.7 m at its highest, at km 4.0 just before the Dapeng police station, and then it drops to the coast. From km 5 to km 36 it stays between 4 m and 10 m above the sea, with the lowest open road at 3.9 m near km 12.3. The same rise comes back on the return at about km 38.

In all the race climbs about 50 m: 22 m before the turn and 29 m after it. A watch that adds up every short rise will read a little more.

Measured

km 0.4 to 41.6GeometryThe Wanli Tunnel at 400 m and again at 40.6 kmA tunnel of just over a kilometre, a few hundred metres after the start and again before the finish.

The organiser’s list of roads goes from the start through the Wanli Tunnel on the way out and through it again on the way home. The outbound tunnel runs from km 0.4 to km 1.6 (1.15 km) and the return tunnel from km 40.6 to km 41.6 (1.0 km), each direction in its own tube.

Runners are inside it before their first kilometre is done, and the last 600 m of the race start at its exit.

Measured

km 5.5 to 42.2TacticsSeven cut-off gates, the turn at 3 h 05 minA 6 h limit, with the first gate at 5.5 km and the turn at 3 h 05 min.

A runner who misses a gate loses the race and is taken back to the start area by the organiser’s bus. The gate at 5.5 km sits at Jiatou, beyond the tunnel, and is generous: 1 h 10 min, where an even 6-hour pace reaches it in 47 minutes. The turn comes at 3 h 05 min, five minutes behind an even 6-hour pace, and every gate after it sits within five minutes of that pace. From 25 km to 30 km and from 30 km to 35 km the organiser allows 41 minutes for each 5 km.

The organiser’s own finishing time is 5 h 45 min, with a 15 minute buffer up to the 6 h limit.
