The organiser describes a south to north crossing of the island: rocks and volcanic cones, the jagged malpaíses, a sunrise from the summit of Teide through the Teide National Park, then a steep descent through pine and laurel forests to trails along the sea on the north coast. It ends on a beach-side finish line in Puerto de la Cruz.

The start is next to the church of San Pedro in Vilaflor de Chasna. The organiser says the route descends to the Charca de Trevejos to join the GR 131 near the Los Topos watchtower, returns to Vilaflor and enters the Teide National Park. It passes the Camino Real de Chasna and the Lunar Landscape, then follows the Filo trail on the south-western slope of the park at over 2,100 m, facing Las Cañadas del Teide, before winding down through pine forest to Puerto de la Cruz. The event also has a 68k, a 47k, a 24k, a 47k relay and a vertical night challenge.

Finish

Under about 75 minutes most runners need no gel: water at the aid stations does it.

For your long training runs:

Our pick: SiS BETA Fuel gel, box of 6, strawberry and lime. 40 g of carbohydrate a gel, about twice a usual gel, from two kinds of sugar your body takes up side by side.

An invisible layer before the start keeps seams, straps and shoes from rubbing skin raw.

Put it on before you leave for the start: heels and toes, inner thighs, under a bra or heart-rate strap.

Try it on a long run first, like everything you use on race day.
