The marathon is a low coastal course: it never rises above 23.4 m or drops below 0.9 m, 22.5 m from the lowest point to the highest. The top comes at 31.6 km and the bottom at 27.4 km, both in the second half that the organiser describes as rolling hills on Middletown’s quiet, rural roads.

The climbing adds up to 129.6 m in the whole marathon. The organiser measures the 2026 course at 847 feet of gain, a watch figure that counts every short rise, so a watch on the day will read higher.

The organiser calls the course a tour of Newport’s highlights, from gilded age mansions to sandy beaches, with the crashing Atlantic coastline and the Bellevue Avenue mansions. Start and finish are both at Easton’s Beach. Both the marathon and the half are USATF-certified and the marathon qualifies for Boston. The organiser names Fort Adams State Park, Brenton Point State Park and Sachuest Point as great places to watch. In 2026 the marathon runners parked at Second Beach in Middletown and rode a shuttle to the start.

For the 2026 race the organiser asked every marathon participant to be able to finish in 6 hours, a pace of 13:44 per mile. The marathon and half marathon both started at 7:30 AM in waves, faster runners first. Anyone expecting to finish close to the limit could take the early 6:30 AM start, when the course was marked but not yet fully supported, and early starters were not eligible for age group or overall awards.
