The race runs through traffic-free streets in the heart of Bath, which the organiser calls the UK’s only World Heritage City, and rates the terrain as road, fast and flat. The start line is in Royal Victoria Park. Four cheer buses and live bands are spread around the 13.1 miles, and drinks stations serve cupped water and energy gel aqua; a bladder pad and toilets are at each one. Runners must be 17 or over on race day.

The organiser gives everyone at least four and a half hours before the finish line closes at 16:00. A runner who cannot hold a four-hour pace but wants to carry on can move onto the pavement, and the event team walks with them to the finish line. Pacers cover target times from 1:30 to 3:00, and a runner can move back to a later starting wave on the day but not to an earlier one.

An invisible layer before the start keeps seams, straps and shoes from rubbing skin raw.

Put it on before you leave for the start: heels and toes, inner thighs, under a bra or heart-rate strap.

Try it on a long run first, like everything you use on race day.
