The course is a loop that starts and ends at about 115 m above sea level. The road climbs from the start to its highest point, 154.9 m, at 13.1 km, then falls steadily to 111 m by 20 km and to its lowest point, 89.4 m, at 29.3 km. It climbs back to about 103 m by 40 km and finishes near where it began.
The marathon climbs 104.5 m in total. A watch on the day will count more small rises than that from overpasses and ramps. The figures are for the organiser’s 2026 course.

The organiser names Shoda Shoyu Stadium Gunma, inside Gunma Prefectural Shikishima Park, as the main venue. The full marathon and the 10 km are certified by the Japan Association of Athletics Federations. There is no bib pickup at the venue on the day before or on race day: bibs and timing chips are posted to runners in late October.

Race fuel
One every 40 minutes, the orange marks on the profile, by the clock:
Under about 75 minutes most runners need no gel: water at the aid stations does it.
For your long training runs:
Our pick: SiS BETA Fuel gel, box of 6, strawberry and lime. 40 g of carbohydrate a gel, about twice a usual gel, from two kinds of sugar your body takes up side by side. Enough for race day and two test long runs.
Easy to forget on race morning: pack them with your bib the night before.

Put it on before you leave for the start: heels and toes, inner thighs, under a bra or heart-rate strap.
Try it on a long run first, like everything you use on race day.

Holds your bib without safety pins through your top, with loops for up to 8 gels.
Clip the bib on the night before, so it goes on with your shorts in the morning.
