The marathon starts in Devonport on the North Shore and finishes at Victoria Park in the city, so it is a point-to-point course.
The organiser describes a run “from the North Shore to the heart of the city”: Devonport, then Takapuna, then onto the Northern Busway, the Harbour Bridge, Westhaven Marina and the Viaduct Harbour. After that the course stretches along the waterfront to St Heliers Bay, turns and comes back to finish at Victoria Park.
The start is King Edward Parade in Devonport, across the water from the finish. The organiser runs chartered ferries to the start from 4:00am on race morning, for a 6:00am gun, and the marathon’s start time is listed as the 2025 one, subject to change for 2026.

The organiser calls the bridge crossing one of the course’s iconic highlights, “with sweeping views of the Waitematā Harbour and Rangitoto Island”, and tells runners it is their “once-a-year chance” to run it. The busway and motorway section is open to runners on race day only; being on it at any other time is illegal.
Timing mats record a split at the bottom and at the top of the bridge as well as every 5 km. The race day schedule has the organiser removing athletes still on the bridge at 10:10am, which is what the clock cut-offs around it are there for: 7:45am at Smales Farm (10 km) and 8:25am at the Onewa Rd on-ramp (14 km).

In the organiser’s words: “Expect rolling terrain in the first half, followed by a flat, fast second half with just two small bridge rises.” The second half is an out-and-back along the waterfront to St Heliers Bay, with a turnaround and bay views, and the organiser lists aid stations at Mission Bay, Kohimarama and Ngapipi on the way.
The cut-offs follow that shape: 11:16am at the St Heliers turn (31 km), then 11:43am at Mission Bay (34 km), 12:10pm at Ngapipi (37 km) and 12:41pm at Quay St (40 km), inside a 7 hour limit. The organiser publishes an elevation chart on its course map but no climb figure.

Race fuel
One every 40 minutes, by the clock:
Under about 75 minutes most runners need no gel: water at the aid stations does it.
For your long training runs:
Our pick: SiS BETA Fuel gel, box of 6, strawberry and lime. 40 g of carbohydrate a gel, about twice a usual gel, from two kinds of sugar your body takes up side by side. Enough for race day and two test long runs.
Easy to forget on race morning: pack them with your bib the night before.

Put it on before you leave for the start: heels and toes, inner thighs, under a bra or heart-rate strap.
Try it on a long run first, like everything you use on race day.

Holds your bib without safety pins through your top, with loops for up to 8 gels.
Clip the bib on the night before, so it goes on with your shorts in the morning.
