Course elevation profile, 8× vertical exaggeration Elevation along the course from km 0 to km 42. The trace runs between 157 and 259 metres, a range of 102 metres, drawn at 8 times vertical exaggeration so the shape is legible. Smoothed over 1 km before this profile was derived. An unsmoothed urban surface carries the buildings and would assert a climb that is not there. The dashed stretches are bridge decks: Götzenturmbrücke, km 1.1 to 1.2; Alte Neckarbrücke, km 15.5 to 15.6; Badstraße, km 41.4 to 41.6. A bare-earth model reads the ground or the water beneath a bridge, not the deck the runner is on, so those runs are interpolated between the ground either side rather than measured, and they under-report the real climb across a span.

The organiser calls the marathon a profiled loop through the vineyards of the Swabian Unterland and puts its climbing at about 400 m. The 2026 route climbs 252 m in all, between 156 m at the lowest point and 259 m at the highest, with the start and the finish both near 157 to 159 m. A watch adds every short rise, so it will read more than 252 m, and the two figures are not the same measurement.

Measured

The marathon page says the start is on Heilbronn’s Badstrasse at the height of the Marinekameradschaft. The course goes to the Götzenturm bridge, over the Neckar and along the right bank to Sontheim. After Flein a climb leads to the highest point, the Haigern near Talheim, where the half marathon turns north. The marathon goes west through Lauffen, where it crosses the Neckar again, towards Brackenheim, then back via Nordhausen and Nordheim to Heilbronn. In the district of Klingenberg the half-marathon course joins it again, and the race ends in the Frankenstadion. The route described is the organiser’s 2026 one.
