Course elevation profile, 8× vertical exaggeration Elevation along the course from km 0 to km 42. The trace runs between 1333 and 2918 metres, a range of 1585 metres, drawn at 8 times vertical exaggeration so the shape is legible. Smoothed over 1 km before this profile was derived. An unsmoothed urban surface carries the buildings and would assert a climb that is not there.

The road is at 2,426 m at 10 km, 2,027 m at 20 km and 1,703 m at 25 km, so the canyon does most of the work. After that the descent eases: 1,450 m at 30 km, 1,365 m at 35 km and 1,333 m at the finish, which makes the last 7 km nearly flat. The organiser quotes a drop of 5,242 feet for the marathon and nearly 15 miles of descent averaging a 5% grade.

The organiser puts nearly 15 miles of the course in the canyon alongside Big Cottonwood Creek, with towering canyon walls. The half marathon starts just below the Mill D parking area and passes under Wasatch Boulevard, through Knudsen Park in Holladay and along Big Cottonwood Road, joining the marathon route to the finish. The marathon course is USATF certified under UT15006KH.

Candlestick barricades stand every 80 feet along the middle of the road in the canyon, and runners must stay to the right of them. Because the canyon is closed, spectators watch from elsewhere on the course, and may park at the finish at Cottonwood High School. The organiser lists 13 aid stations on the marathon course.
