The 2026 race started at 9:00 on Sunday 28 June at the Chiyodai Park athletics stadium. The rules describe a course on which the half marathon makes two turnarounds and the full marathon five before coming back to the stadium for the finish. The course page says runners go a little less than one lap of the track, pass under the Marathon Gate and head for the downtown and Goryokaku. The half and the full split near the Yunokawa hot-spring district. Along the Kameda River they reach a junction where the half marathon has about 2 km left and the full marathon carries on to the bay area.

km 24 to 42.2LandmarkThe foot of Mount Hakodate, then the bay and the bridgeAoyagi-cho from 24 km, a turn at about 35 km, the Midori-no-shima island and the Tomoe Bridge again.

The organiser’s course page picks out three stretches. Around Aoyagi-cho at the foot of Mount Hakodate, which starts at 24 km for the full marathon, the road keeps rising and falling beside the tram line. The full-marathon runners then cross the up-and-down Tomoe Bridge to the bay area and its Meiji-era red-brick warehouses. They turn at about 35 km and soon reach the artificial island of Midori-no-shima. Then they come back past the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse and the Shichizai Bridge and cross the Tomoe Bridge a second time on the way to the stadium.

An invisible layer before the start keeps seams, straps and shoes from rubbing skin raw.

Put it on before you leave for the start: heels and toes, inner thighs, under a bra or heart-rate strap.

Try it on a long run first, like everything you use on race day.
