The marathon starts in the Sportpark Duisburg, which the organiser calls Germany’s largest sports park, and passes the Theater Duisburg early on. At kilometre five it goes through the Innenhafen between old brick warehouses and modern architecture, then over the port peninsulas of Pontwert and Kiffward in the world’s largest inland port.

In Ruhrort, where the Schimanski crime films were shot, the runners cross the Friedrich-Ebert-Bridge past the 25 metre steel sculpture Rheinorange to the left bank of the Rhine. The red Bridge of Solidarity between Rheinhausen and Hochfeld is called the most emotional moment of the route. The Sechs-Seen-Platte recreation area comes shortly before the finish in the Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena.
