Course elevation profile, 8× vertical exaggeration Elevation along the course from km 0 to km 42. The trace runs between 2 and 29 metres, a range of 28 metres, drawn at 8 times vertical exaggeration so the shape is legible. Smoothed over 1 km before this profile was derived. An unsmoothed urban surface carries the buildings and would assert a climb that is not there. The dashed stretches are bridge decks: Pont Napoléon III, km 6.7 to 7; Promenade de l'Hippodrome, km 13 to 13.1. A bare-earth model reads the ground or the water beneath a bridge, not the deck the runner is on, so those runs are interpolated between the ground either side rather than measured, and they under-report the real climb across a span.

The marathon starts on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice at 4.9 m and finishes on the Boulevard de la Croisette in Cannes at 3.8 m, a metre lower. Between them the road is almost level: the lowest point is 1.8 m near km 17.9, and the highest is 29.5 m at about km 28.2.

The organiser puts the total climb at 100 m (“100 m de D+ cumulé”). Along the road itself the rises add up to about 70 m, and nearly all of that is in two places, after km 27 and after km 35.

Measured

km 26.5 to 30GradientThe one real hill, after km 27A 24 m rise between km 27 and km 28, and straight back down.

After 26 km close to sea level the course lifts. From about km 26.8 it rises roughly 24 m in 1.4 km, to a top of 29.5 m at about km 28.2, close to where the road passes the Cap d’Antibes. The descent is as short as the climb: by km 29.6 the road is back at about 3.3 m and stays there.

It is the highest point of the whole course, and it comes with 14 km still to run.

Measured

km 35 to 39GradientA last rise of 11 m before CannesA rise of about 11 m from km 35 to km 37, flat again by km 39.

The second and last rise starts at about km 35.2, from 2.7 m, and tops out at 14.2 m around km 37.2. It is gentler than the one at km 27, about 11 m over 2 km. By km 38.9 the road is back at 3 m, and the final 3 km into Cannes are level.
