Course elevation profile, 8× vertical exaggeration Elevation along the course from km 0 to km 42. The trace runs between 2 and 17 metres, a range of 15 metres, drawn at 8 times vertical exaggeration so the shape is legible. Smoothed over 1 km before this profile was derived. An unsmoothed urban surface carries the buildings and would assert a climb that is not there. The dashed stretches are bridge decks: Rugårdsvej, km 0.8 to 0.9; Åløkke Allé, km 1.2 to 1.3; Odins Bro, km 25.3 to 25.7. A bare-earth model reads the ground or the water beneath a bridge, not the deck the runner is on, so those runs are interpolated between the ground either side rather than measured, and they under-report the real climb across a span. Marked points: Cut-off 13:00 at km 20.5.

The organiser’s route page states that the difference between the highest and lowest point is 21 m, and the homepage calls the route fast: in 2019 the race was named the world’s fastest marathon by average finishing time, according to the organiser. The ground itself ranges over 15 m, from 2 m near the river to 17 m near the start, and the 2026 route climbs 73 m in all. The two figures are different measurements.

Whole courseLandmarkTwo laps through Odense, finishing in the Athletics StadiumTwo laps past Flakhaven and Munke Mose, finishing in the Athletics Stadium.

The organiser lists the route street by street. It starts near Stadionvej, goes through the centre across Flakhaven, through Munke Mose and by the Odense river, and the marathon runs the loop twice, with Odins Bro on the second-lap description. The marathon and the half marathon split on Møllemarksvej before the half marathon runners enter the Athletics Stadium; the finish is in the stadium. The organiser says the route is car-free from 10:00 to 16:00 and is measured and approved by AIMS. The route described is the 2026 one.

The route is traffic-free from 10:00 to 16:00, and traffic is let back on along a fixed schedule: at about 13:30 at km 24, for example. A marathon runner who has not passed 20.5 km by 13:00 is told to continue to the finish and not start the second lap. The sports expo and bib collection is open on Friday 24 September 14:00 to 18:00, Saturday 10:00 to 16:30 and Sunday 08:00 to 16:00.

An invisible layer before the start keeps seams, straps and shoes from rubbing skin raw.

Put it on before you leave for the start: heels and toes, inner thighs, under a bra or heart-rate strap.

Try it on a long run first, like everything you use on race day.
