The trace runs between 4 and 297 metres, a range of 292 metres, drawn at 8 times vertical exaggeration so the shape is legible. Smoothed over 1 km before this profile was derived. An unsmoothed urban surface carries the buildings and would assert a climb that is not there.

The Loch Ness Marathon is a point-to-point course that runs from the moor between Fort Augustus and Whitebridge to Inverness. The ground at the start is 297 m above sea level and falls to 191 m by 4.2 km, 139 m by 10 km and 24 m by 16 km, where the road reaches the shore of the loch. It stays between about 24 m and 33 m along the loch until 29 km.

The organiser says the course heads away from the loch from about 17 miles with an uphill section for a couple of miles. The road is at 24 m at 27.4 km and 67 m at 30.6 km, then levels and falls through Inverness to a low point of 4.5 m at 40.6 km, close to the Ness Bridge, and ends at 6.6 m. The marathon climbs 139 m in all. The organiser calls it a net downhill course.

An invisible layer before the start keeps seams, straps and shoes from rubbing skin raw.

Put it on before you leave for the start: heels and toes, inner thighs, under a bra or heart-rate strap.

Try it on a long run first, like everything you use on race day.

Put it on clean, dry skin and leave it until it comes off by itself.
