The organiser finishes the 42 km, 21 km and 10 km races in Uhuru Gardens, off Lang'ata Road beside the start on the Southern Bypass.

Height drawn many times taller than life. Heights: GEDTM30.

Course elevation profile, 8× vertical exaggeration Elevation along the course from km 0 to km 42. The trace runs between 1641 and 1873 metres, a range of 232 metres, drawn at 8 times vertical exaggeration so the shape is legible. Smoothed over 1 km before this profile was derived. An unsmoothed urban surface carries the buildings and would assert a climb that is not there. The dashed stretches are bridge decks: (unnamed span), km 4.8 to 4.9; Southern Bypass, km 25.5 to 25.5; Southern Bypass, km 31.9 to 32. A bare-earth model reads the ground or the water beneath a bridge, not the deck the runner is on, so those runs are interpolated between the ground either side rather than measured, and they under-report the real climb across a span.

km 0 to 42.2GeometryTwo out-and-backs on the Southern BypassEast to a turn at km 7.9, west to a turn at km 28.7, then home to Uhuru Gardens.

The first leg heads east, with Nairobi National Park on the right, past the Mombasa Road interchange to the turn by the ICD, which the organiser puts 7.9 km from the start. The same road brings runners back past the start at about km 15.7.

The second leg goes west, past the Lang’ata Road and Ngong Road interchanges, to the turning point short of the Dagoretti Road interchange at km 28.7. The last 13.5 km come back the same way, leave the bypass at the Lang’ata Road interchange and finish inside Uhuru Gardens.

Measured

km 7.9 to 42.2GradientOne long climb west, then downhill homeDownhill to km 8, a long climb to 1,873 m at km 29, then 13 km downhill to the finish.

The first 8 km fall 47 m to the low point of the race at the eastern turn. From there the road climbs for 21 km: gently back past the start, then harder west of it, with 87 m gained between km 16 and km 20 alone, up to 1,873 m at the western turn.

After km 29 there are only 3 m of climbing left. The way home drops from 1,873 m to 1,692 m at the finish, so the last third of the race is nearly all downhill.

An invisible layer before the start keeps seams, straps and shoes from rubbing skin raw.

Put it on before you leave for the start: heels and toes, inner thighs, under a bra or heart-rate strap.

Try it on a long run first, like everything you use on race day.
