Course elevation profile, 8× vertical exaggeration Elevation along the course from km 0 to km 42. The trace runs between -4 and 3 metres, a range of 7 metres, drawn at 8 times vertical exaggeration so the shape is legible. Smoothed over 1 km before this profile was derived. An unsmoothed urban surface carries the buildings and would assert a climb that is not there. The dashed stretches are bridge decks: Europaweg, km 1.6 to 1.7; Europaweg, km 2.9 to 3.1; Groenendijksepad, km 9 to 9.2; Achthovenerweg, km 11.7 to 11.8; Oud Adeselaan, km 31.1 to 31.1; Leidseweg, km 34.3 to 34.4. A bare-earth model reads the ground or the water beneath a bridge, not the deck the runner is on, so those runs are interpolated between the ground either side rather than measured, and they under-report the real climb across a span.

The organiser’s text for the full marathon reads: “Je start in de Leidse binnenstad en gaat via de polder dwars door de mooie dorpen in de regio. Daarna wacht je een waar onthaal in de stad. Vanaf de singels staat het publiek rijendik.” The finish is on the Vismarkt.

The course page calls the route varied, flat, “typisch Hollands en verrassend groen”, with canals, monuments, windmills, polders and characteristic villages, and says the 42 and 21 km run through the green countryside around Leiden.
