Course elevation profile, 8× vertical exaggeration Elevation along the course from km 0 to km 42. The trace runs between 396 and 406 metres, a range of 9 metres, drawn at 8 times vertical exaggeration so the shape is legible. Smoothed over 1 km before this profile was derived. An unsmoothed urban surface carries the buildings and would assert a climb that is not there. The dashed stretches are bridge decks: Chelles-Allee, km 1.1 to 1.3; (unnamed span), km 8.6 to 8.7; Rheinstraße, km 14.6 to 14.7; Rheinstraße, km 20 to 20.1; Rheinbrücke Hard-Fußach, km 20.2 to 20.5; (unnamed span), km 24.8 to 24.9; Strandbadstrasse, km 28.4 to 28.7; Rheinbrücke Hard-Fußach, km 32.6 to 32.8; Rheinstraße, km 33 to 33.1; (unnamed span), km 37.8 to 38. A bare-earth model reads the ground or the water beneath a bridge, not the deck the runner is on, so those runs are interpolated between the ground either side rather than measured, and they under-report the real climb across a span.

The organiser describes a flat course that starts at the harbour of the island town of Lindau, crosses into Austria and runs through the lake stage in Bregenz, where the sets of the Spiel am See draw 160,000 visitors every summer. A loop through Switzerland brings runners to St. Margrethen, where spectators carry them through the village centre, and the Rhine leads back to Austria and the finish in the Bregenz stadium. 60 per cent of the course follows Lake Constance, and it is mostly on asphalt roads and paths.
