Course elevation profile, 8× vertical exaggeration Elevation along the course from km 0 to km 42. The trace runs between 108 and 137 metres, a range of 29 metres, drawn at 8 times vertical exaggeration so the shape is legible. Smoothed over 1 km before this profile was derived. An unsmoothed urban surface carries the buildings and would assert a climb that is not there. The dashed stretches are bridge decks: Augustusbrücke, km 1 to 1.4; Stauffenbergallee, km 5.7 to 5.8; Waldschlößchenbrücke, km 7.1 to 7.8; Albertbrücke, km 18 to 18.3; Waldschlößchenbrücke, km 20.3 to 20.9. A bare-earth model reads the ground or the water beneath a bridge, not the deck the runner is on, so those runs are interpolated between the ground either side rather than measured, and they under-report the real climb across a span. km 0 to 42.2GradientOne rise in the first 6 km, then flatOne rise early, a drop at the Waldschlösschen Bridge, then 34 km on the valley floor.

The start on Ostra-Allee is at about 112 m. The road rises through the Neustadt side of the river and reaches its highest point, about 137 m, near km 6. By km 8, past the Waldschlösschen Bridge, the course is down at about 115 m.

From there to the stadium it never leaves a band of roughly 109 to 120 m. The whole marathon adds up to about 73 m of climbing, most of it in that first stretch.

Measured

km 0 to 42.2LandmarkThe Old Town, the Neustadt and Brühl's TerraceBaroque Old Town and the Augustus Bridge early, Brühl's Terrace and the Elbe bank at the end.

The start is on Ostra-Allee, near Kleine Packhofstraße. The baroque Old Town comes first, and the Augustus Bridge carries the course over the Elbe at about km 1, into the Neustadt, the pub and Gründerzeit district on the north bank.

The finish mirrors the start. Back on the south bank, the road runs along the river beneath Brühl’s Terrace near km 40, with the Semper Opera House close by, and ends with half a lap of the track inside the Heinz-Steyer-Stadion.

km 12 to 26LandmarkA different second half, through BlasewitzWaldschlösschen Bridge twice, the Großer Garten near km 12, then a Blasewitz loop after km 21.

The first half runs through the illuminated Waldschlösschen Tunnel and over the Waldschlösschen Bridge near km 7, then on to the Großer Garten, around km 12. The bridge is crossed a second time near km 20.

The Albert Bridge, at about km 18, is the Elbe crossing in between. After the second pass over the Waldschlösschen Bridge, the course turns east into Blasewitz, with the castles on the Loschwitz hillside in view and the villas along Goetheallee.

An invisible layer before the start keeps seams, straps and shoes from rubbing skin raw.

Put it on before you leave for the start: heels and toes, inner thighs, under a bra or heart-rate strap.

Try it on a long run first, like everything you use on race day.
