The organiser lists the Takaoka Great Buddha, one of Japan's three great Buddhas, among the sights the course passes.

Course elevation profile, 8× vertical exaggeration Elevation along the course from km 0 to km 42. The trace runs between 1 and 19 metres, a range of 18 metres, drawn at 8 times vertical exaggeration so the shape is legible. Smoothed over 1 km before this profile was derived. An unsmoothed urban surface carries the buildings and would assert a climb that is not there. The dashed stretches are bridge decks: 高岡小杉線, km 3.9 to 4.2; (unnamed span), km 7 to 7.4; 新庄川橋, km 14.9 to 15.3; (unnamed span), km 16.7 to 17; 新湊大橋, km 19.6 to 22; 小竹諏訪川原線, km 40.3 to 40.9; (unnamed span), km 41.6 to 41.7. A bare-earth model reads the ground or the water beneath a bridge, not the deck the runner is on, so those runs are interpolated between the ground either side rather than measured, and they under-report the real climb across a span. Marked points: Cut-off 10:41 at km 9.2; Cut-off 11:32 at km 14.4; Cut-off 12:09 at km 18.3; Cut-off 12:51 at km 22.6; Cut-off 13:28 at km 26.4; Cut-off 13:52 at km 28.9; Cut-off 14:34 at km 33.2; Cut-off 14:56 at km 35.5; Cut-off 15:25 at km 38.5; Cut-off 15:59 at km 41.6.

The 2026 course starts at Takaoka City Hall at about 9 m above sea level, crosses the Shinminato Bridge, and finishes by the Fugan Canal on the Toyama side at about 7 m. It gains 32 m over the 42.2 km, and no point on it rises above about 20 m. A watch will count more than 32 m because it adds every short rise.

Measured

Whole courseLandmarkFrom Takaoka Castle to Toyama's canal parkStart by Takaoka's castle park, Great Buddha and Yamachosuji, then the Shinminato Bridge to Toyama.

The organiser lists the certified marathon course in order: Takaoka City Hall, the Takaoka Great Buddha, Yamachosuji, the area around Shin-Takaoka Station, the Shinminato Bridge, the Toyama Kita Bridge and the Fugan Canal Kansui Park. The start is near the ruins of Takaoka Castle, built by Maeda Toshinaga. The runners pass the Takaoka Sekino Shrine and turn near the Hokuriku Shinkansen’s Shin-Takaoka Station. If bad weather means the Shinminato Bridge cannot be used, a non-certified sub-course is run instead.

The organiser says the 2026 course changed from the previous edition: the Akasobu turnaround is about 260 m shorter, the Imizu technical college turnaround about 180 m shorter, and the finish about 440 m further on.
