The organiser starts the marathon in downtown Tulsa, which it describes as home of the largest concentration of Art Deco architecture outside of Miami, and then takes runners through the city’s neighborhoods and across the campus of the University of Tulsa. Neighborhoods host block parties along the course. The course is USATF certified and a Boston qualifier.

The half marathon runs with the marathon until around mile 11, then heads to the finish at Guthrie Green while the marathoners carry on.

The marathon, half marathon and marathon relay all start together at 8 am on Sunday. The organiser gives a maximum pace of 16:30 per mile and a 6.5 hour official time limit. Runners slower than that may be asked by the Tulsa Police Department to move to the sidewalk so streets can reopen, and the drink and medical stations close on the same 6.5 hour limit.

The timing system itself stays open for 7.5 hours, but the course closes at 16:30 a mile counted from when the last participant starts.

Whole courseLandmarkThe Center of the Universe detourAn optional 0.3 mile detour to a brick circle where your voice echoes.

The organiser offers the Center of the Universe Detour to full marathon runners only. It adds 0.3 mile to the run, needs no pre-registration and can be decided on the day. The spot is a brick circle: a runner who stands in the middle and talks hears an echo that people outside the circle do not. Those who take the detour receive an inlaid coin and a beer, and the organiser calls the extra distance the World’s Shortest Ultramarathon.

An invisible layer before the start keeps seams, straps and shoes from rubbing skin raw.

Put it on before you leave for the start: heels and toes, inner thighs, under a bra or heart-rate strap.

Try it on a long run first, like everything you use on race day.
