Gübsensee

The organiser's course page sends the half marathon east past the Gübsensee after the first kilometre, up the 260 m climb of its hill sprint.

Height drawn many times taller than life. Heights: GEDTM30.

Course elevation profile, 8× vertical exaggeration Elevation along the course from km 0 to km 21. The trace runs between 567 and 689 metres, a range of 122 metres, drawn at 8 times vertical exaggeration so the shape is legible. Smoothed over 1 km before this profile was derived. An unsmoothed urban surface carries the buildings and would assert a climb that is not there. The dashed stretches are bridge decks: Gübsenweg, km 3.5 to 3.7; Vonwilstrasse, km 11.2 to 11.3; Spiseggbrücke, km 15.2 to 15.3; Rechensteg, km 16.1 to 16.2; Rechenwaldstrasse, km 17.1 to 17.2; Geissbergstrasse, km 19.3 to 19.5; (unnamed span), km 20.8 to 20.9. A bare-earth model reads the ground or the water beneath a bridge, not the deck the runner is on, so those runs are interpolated between the ground either side rather than measured, and they under-report the real climb across a span.

The organiser’s course page starts the half marathon at the Stadion St.Gallen, the largest football stadium in eastern Switzerland, in the west of the city. After a kilometre the route turns east past the Gübsensee and on over the goods yard into the centre. It passes the Roter Platz, runs through Multergasse and Spisergasse, crosses the Klosterplatz and goes down over the Kreuzbleiche into the Sittertobel. The Siebenbrückenweg and the open-air grounds lead back to the stadium, where the finish is.

An invisible layer before the start keeps seams, straps and shoes from rubbing skin raw.

Put it on before you leave for the start: heels and toes, inner thighs, under a bra or heart-rate strap.

Try it on a long run first, like everything you use on race day.
