Course elevation profile, 8× vertical exaggeration Elevation along the course from km 0 to km 42. The trace runs between 1 and 60 metres, a range of 59 metres, drawn at 8 times vertical exaggeration so the shape is legible. Smoothed over 1 km before this profile was derived. An unsmoothed urban surface carries the buildings and would assert a climb that is not there. The dashed stretches are bridge decks: (unnamed span), km 23.6 to 23.8. A bare-earth model reads the ground or the water beneath a bridge, not the deck the runner is on, so those runs are interpolated between the ground either side rather than measured, and they under-report the real climb across a span. km 0 to 42.2GradientSea level for half the race, then a long climbFlat along the coast to halfway, then a steady climb to 60 m before a downhill finish.

From Courseulles-sur-Mer the road runs inland along the coast, and until about km 22 it sits between 1 and 9 m above sea level. The lowest point is 1.2 m at km 21.1, and by km 25 the road has risen to 26 m.

The climb is gradual and comes late: 33 m at km 30, 56 m at km 35 and the high point of 60 m at km 37.8. The organiser quotes 110 m of climbing for the marathon, while the road itself gains 89 m; a watch counts every short rise, so figures differ. This is the 2026 course; the organiser says the finish line moves in 2027.

The organiser describes the D-Day Landings Marathon as a tour of the key sites of the landings and the Battle of Normandy: Juno and Sword Beaches, the Ouistreham Casino and Pegasus Bridge. It runs from Courseulles-sur-Mer to the centre of Caen and crosses 17 historic towns.

On the 2026 course Pegasus Bridge comes at about km 21.7, close to halfway. The organiser says the finish line gets a makeover in 2027.

The high point of the course is at km 37.8, 60 m above sea level. From there it is downhill to the finish: the road is at 24 m by km 40 and about 7 m at the end. The 2026 course passes the Abbey of Saint-Étienne, the Abbaye aux Hommes, at about km 41.5 and the castle ramparts near km 40.7.

The organiser says the finish line moves in 2027, so the last kilometre may change.
