Course elevation profile, 8× vertical exaggeration Elevation along the course from km 0 to km 42. The trace runs between 4 and 28 metres, a range of 25 metres, drawn at 8 times vertical exaggeration so the shape is legible. Smoothed over 1 km before this profile was derived. An unsmoothed urban surface carries the buildings and would assert a climb that is not there. The dashed stretches are bridge decks: Tromsøbrua, km 0.9 to 2; Tromsøbrua, km 30.7 to 31.7. A bare-earth model reads the ground or the water beneath a bridge, not the deck the runner is on, so those runs are interpolated between the ground either side rather than measured, and they under-report the real climb across a span.

The organiser’s information page puts the start on Prostneset and the finish at the Cultural Center. Its drink and toilet stations for the marathon run in this order: Solstrandvegen, Tromsøsvingen, Sandvika, then Tromsøsvingen and Solstrandvegen again on the return, with a Red Cross station every 5 km. Kilometre markers count down: the first one reads 42.

The course map page says there may be minor changes in 2027.

km 0 to 42.2GradientBetween 4 and 28 metres above the seaLow ground all the way, with one rise around km 10 to 11 and nothing above 15 m after km 31.

The course starts at 7.7 m and finishes at 10.7 m. About 59% of it lies at or below 15 m. The highest ground is the rise from about km 9.8 to km 11.4, where the road reaches 28.5 m; by km 13 it is back to 11 m. From km 31 to the finish the road never goes above 14.6 m, and its lowest point, 4.0 m, is at km 36.8: a relief of 24.5 m for the whole race.

Measured

km 0.9 to 31.7LandmarkThe Tromsø Bridge, crossed twiceA bridge on the way out, and the same bridge on the way back around km 31.

The first crossing comes inside the opening two kilometres, from km 0.942 to 1.969, and the second from km 30.703 to 31.731, so the bridge is both an early landmark and the way back toward the finish. After the second crossing roughly 10.5 km remain; the organiser’s check at Stortorget in Sjøgata, with 10 km to go, falls in that stretch.

Measured

The organiser’s information page gives the marathon limit as 5 hours and 30 minutes. Runners who have not passed Stortorget in Sjøgata with 10 kilometers left to the finish will be stopped at 00.45 and given the status not completed; from there it is walking distance to the finish area, the drink station and the luggage storage. The page also says: “The finish line closes at 02:00 at night.”

An invisible layer before the start keeps seams, straps and shoes from rubbing skin raw.

Try it on a long run first, like everything you use on race day.
