For years the Tokyo Marathon ran two distances on the same morning: the marathon, and a 10.7 km race over the opening stretch of the course. For 2027 there is only the marathon.
The 2027 race guideline lists exactly two events, Marathon and Wheelchair Marathon, and the 10.7 km appears nowhere in it.
The organiser’s reason
It is not a cut. On its twentieth-anniversary page the Tokyo Marathon Foundation writes:
A new para-athlete division has been created to heighten the appeal of marathon elite racing by people with disabilities. In conjunction with this, new entry categories have been created for people with disabilities, further promoting their participation in sports. Due to these changes, the 10.7km run has been superseded by the marathon.
So the shorter event has been folded upward rather than deleted: what used to be run over 10.7 km is now run over the full distance, in its own division. The organiser does not publish which entry categories the 10.7 km carried, so that is as far as the source goes.
The practical consequence is simple and worth knowing before you plan a trip. There is no shorter Tokyo Marathon event in 2027. If you were looking at the 10.7 km as a way into race day, it is not there any more.
The rest of the 2027 race
- Sunday 7 March 2027, the 20th edition.
- Marathon starts 09:10; the wheelchair marathon starts 09:05.
- Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku to Tokyo Station, by way of Ueno, Asakusa, Ryogoku, Monzen-nakacho and Ginza.
- The field goes up to 40,000, from 39,000.
- Bib collection is in person only, across 4–6 March, with a photo-ID check, no proxy collection, and none on race day. Miss those three days and you cannot start.
Start-block closing times, security-gate opening and baggage hours are not published yet. The organiser puts them in the Runner Guidebook, which it says will appear in mid-February 2027.
